Julian Edelman Charges Dropped In Indecent Assault And Battery Case

Charges have been dropped against New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who was accused of groping a woman in a nightclub during a Halloween party at 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 1.

Suffolk County prosecutors said they will not proceed with the case because insufficient evidence exists to prove the crime beyond a reasonable doubt.

"After a thorough investigation of this case by the Boston Police Department's Sexual Assault Unit ... the Commonwealth has concluded that it would not be able to meet its burden at trial of proving each of the elements of indecent assault and battery beyond a reasonable doubt," prosecutors said in a document filed in court today, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley's office.

"The evidence suggests that he approached a woman on the dance floor and took her hand briefly. Review of the videotape indicates that the physical contact between the two was fleeting ... and did not meet the elements of any crime," prosecutors said in a statement.

Julian Edelman Arrest Update: Bill Belichick, New England Patriots Not Commenting On Reports

The New England Patriots issued a statement Tuesday saying that the team is aware of the reports regarding wide receiver Julian Edelman, but will defer any comment to his representatives at this time.

According to reports, police were called to the Storyville nightclub in Back Bay at 1:30 a.m early Tuesday to investigate allegations that Edelman assaulted a woman on the dance floor at a Halloween party. Edelman allegedly "reached under" a woman's Halloween costume and "grabbed her vagina." A male witness said he watched "an expression of shock" come over the woman's face. The witness and the alleged victim both demanded that Edelman be kicked out of the club, but the pair were kicked out first when the witness threatened to fight Edelman.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked about the reports during a conference call Tuesday.

"I don't think we have enough information to comment on that right now," he said.

Julian Edelman Arrest Update: Wide Receiver Allegedly Groped Woman, According To Police Report

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery charges after being arrested early Tuesday morning for allegedly groping a woman on the dance floor during a Hallowen party at a Back Bay bar, according to a police report cited by the Boston Herald.

Edelman was freed on personal recognizance and ordered by a judge not to return to the Storyville Bar, the site of the alleged incident. Edelman was also ordered to steer clear of the alleged victim.

The police report states that Edelman "reached under" a woman's Halloween costume and "grabbed her vagina." A male witness said he watched "an expression of shock" come over the woman's face. The witness and the alleged victim both demanded that Edelman be kicked out of the club, but the pair were kicked out first when the witness threatened to fight Edelman.

Edelman was then asked to leave the club, later denying the allegations to police, according to the police report. He was arrested and subsequently booked by Boston police.

However, Edelman was called shortly after and arraigned on his charges. Per Oliverio, the DA said that Edelman groped a young woman but was not seeking bail, instead ordering Edelman to stay away from the woman and the nightclub.

Afterwards, Edelman left without speaking to reporters and his lawyer was silent as well. However, according to Oliverio, Edelman did sign one autograph before he left the premises.
