The Baylor Bears completed a perfect 40-0 season with an 80-61 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Tuesday night. Brittney Griner scored 17 of her 26 points in the second half, and picked up 13 rebounds and five blocked shots to add Championship Game MVP honors to her already long list of accomplishments.
The Irish managed to stay within seven points at halftime, but Griner and the Bears were simply too strong. Baylor hauled in 45 rebounds to 24 for Notre Dame. That total includes 16 offensive rebounds, representing 55 percent of their missed shots. The Bears shot 50 percent from the floor, compared to 35.5 percent by the Fighting Irish.
Skylar Diggins scored 20 points to lead Notre Dame, but shot just 7-for-17 from the field to get there. Brittany Mallory was the hero in overtime during the NCAA semifinal against UConn, but managed just three points on 1-for-3 shooting. Meanwhile, Natalie Novosel went 0-for-11 from the floor for just five points.
Odyssey Sims was Baylor's second leading scorer, picking up 19 points. Destiny Williams was also efficient from the floor, making 5-of-7 on her way to 12 points and six rebounds. Tuesday belonged to Griner, however. After her performance it's hard to believe that she will really be back next season, but she insists she will play her senior year at Baylor. In which case, anything less than perfection can only be considered a disappointment for the Bears.

The Baylor Bears led by as many as 14 points in the first half, before the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came back to make the score close at halftime. Brittney Griner has nine points and eight rebounds at halftime, but has made just 3-of-7 shooting from the field. The Bears lead the Irish, 34-28, through the first 20 minutes of the game.
Unsurprisingly, Skylar Diggins leads the Irish in scoring with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting in the first half. As a team, Notre Dame is shooting just 34.4 percent from the field, however. Griner has done a tremendous job changing shots in the lane, recording three blocks already. So far, the Bears are dominating the rebounding battle 25 to 15.
Destiny Williams and Odyssey Sims both chipped in eight points to help lead the Bears.

The 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament will conclude Tuesday night. The Baylor Lady Bears, the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament, will attempt to make history by becoming the only NCAA team to get 40 victories in a season. Another No. 1 seed, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, are 35-3 this season and are a familiar opponent for Baylor as the teams met in the Preseason NIT.
Notre Dame is playing in their second consecutive championship game after losing to Texas A&M last season. Baylor won the NCAA title in their only other Final Four appearance in 2005.
To get to the championship, Baylor defeated UC Santa Barbara, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Stanford. Notre Dame was victorious against Liberty, California, St. Bonaventure, Maryland and UConn in the earlier rounds. With the Final Four win over UConn, the Irish made up for their loss in the Big East Championship against the Huskies.
Baylor is led by 6-8 junior Brittney Griner. Notre Dame is led by All-American Skylar Diggins. Both players had big games for their teams in the first meeting. Baylor won that game by 13 points. Will the final be any different?

The Baylor Bears defeated the Stanford Cardinal on Sunday night, 59-47, to punch their ticket to the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament Championship Game to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Brittney Griner struggled more than she has in any other matchup this tournament, but still picked up 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
She of course had the difficult task of taking on Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike, projected by many to be the No. 1 pick in this year's WNBA Draft (assuming Griner holds to her word to finish her college career at Baylor). Ogwumike led all scorers with 22 points in addition to nine blocked shots. Toni Kokenis pitched in nine points, but ultimately it wasn't enough to overcome a more balanced effort by the Bears.
The Bears will take on the Fighting Irish in the championship game, winners in overtime over the Connecticut Huskies on Saturday.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish took out the Connecticut Huskies on Sunday night to advance to the championship game at the 2012 NCAA Women's Tournament in Denver. A back-and-forth affair ended with a wild finish. The Huskies were down as many as seven points under 10 minutes to go in the game, but clawed back to force overtime. The Fighting Irish got hot beyond the arc after regulation, however, to win 83-75.
Regulation ended in a frenzy. With the game tied at 65 apiece, the Huskies turned the ball over but stole it back on the same possession. Kelly Faris sunk two free throws to give UConn a two-point lead. Natalie Novosel hauled in an offensive rebound off a missed Skylar Diggins jumper, and scored on a hook shot for the Irish to tie the game again with four seconds remaining. Tiffany Hayes had a chance to win the game at the buzzer for the Huskies, but time ran out as she passed the shot up.
The Huskies took the upperhand early in overtime, going up three points on a Bria Hartley 3-pointer. The Irish quickly turned the tide with treys on back-to-back possessions. Brittany Mallory hit the second, then hit another with 1:34 left to put UConn in a stranglehold down four points. Mallory finished with seven points in overtime coming off a scoreless second half.
Stefanie Dolson led the Huskies with 20 points and nine rebounds, and could have had more if she hadn't picked up her fourth foul just three minutes into the second half to force herself to the bench. Hartley finished with 18, and as a team the Huskies outshot the Irish 45.6 percent to 40.3 percent.
The Irish rebounded over half of their misses, however, and forced 22 turnovers to make up for the Huskies' shooting. Novosel scored 20 to lead the way, though she went just 5-for-19 from the field to get there. Devereaux Peters had 12 rebounds to go with 17 points for the game's only double-double.
With the win, the Irish advanced to championship where they will play the winner of Sunday's late semifinal between Baylor and Stanford.

The UConn Huskies lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 36-33, at halftime in the 2012 Women's Final Four at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
Both teams largely avoided foul trouble during a scrappy first half as very few fouls were called despite numerous opportunities for calls. That style of play favored the more physical UConn squad. After Notre Dame opened with a 9-4 lead in the first three minutes, UConn went on a 26-15 run over the next 13 minutes. As more fouls were called late in the half, the game tightened up.
UConn was paced by 12 points and 5 rebounds by Stefanie Dolson. Dolson had to sit on the bench with under 2 minutes to play in the half with two fouls. Bria Hartley chipped in 10 points for UConn. Notre Dame was led by 11 points by Natalie Novosel.

The 1-seed Connecticut Huskies are headed to the Final Four at the 2012 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament after taking out the 2-seed Kentucky Wildcats on Monday night. The Huskies led by just two points at halftime, but led by as many as 22 in the second half on their way to an 80-65 win.
Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points to pace the Huskies, going 6-for-11 from the floor. She and two other players led the team with eight rebounds to help UConn to a massive 37-21 advantage on the boards. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 18 points to help the Huskies match a school-record five straight Final Four appearances.
Samarie Walker led the Wildcats with 14 points. Unfortunately, Kentucky had no answer for the defensive prowess of the Huskies in the second half. For the game, the Wildcats just 31.1 percent from the field, and 28.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Huskies will face the winner of Monday night's late game between the 2-seed Maryland Terrapins and the 1-seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the tournament semifinals in Denver.

The UConn Huskies lead the Kentucky Wildcats, 41-39, at halftime in the Elite Eight of the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament from the Ryan Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
UConn started strong and built a quick 11-3 over the first four minutes of the game. Just eight minutes into the half, UConn led, 19-10. The Wildcats went on a run and were able to erase the deficit and take the lead while UConn's Bria Hartley sat on the bench with two fouls. Foul trouble by UConn ultimately sent Kentucky to the line for 14 attempts in the first half and the Wildcats made every shot at the charity stripe while only shooting 36.7% from the floor.
Leading at halftime did not look to be a certainty for Uconn with five minutes to play in the half. The Wildcats had an answer for every UConn basket. Kentucky was able to tie the game at 39-39 when Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis fouled A'dia Mathies. Mathies made both free throws. Then, UConn threw a deep inbounds pass to Kelly Faris who caught it, raced down the floor and made a layup to take the lead into the halftime in just 2.1 seconds.
UConn was led by 11 points by Tiffany Hayes and Stefanie Dolson. Kentucky was paced by 11 points by Bria Goss.
