Former Red Sox outfielder Marlon Byrd has been suspended by MLB for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Marlon Byrd, a former Boston Red Sox outfielder, has been suspended for 50 games by MLB for a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance the league announced on Monday(via MLB Twitter). Byrd, 34, reportedly tested positive for Tamoxifen.

Byrd was traded to the Red Sox by the Chicago Cubs in April 2012. After playing 34 games for the Red Sox this season and hitting .270 with one home run and seven RBI, Byrd was designated for assignment on June 9 to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was returning to the lineup from injury. Byrd was released by the Red Sox on June 12 and is now a free agent. Byrd is in the final year of a three-year $15 million contract with the Cubs that was to bring him $6.5 million this season. It is therefore no surprise that Byrd cleared waivers.

Byrd, an All-Star in 2010, has hit .270 for his 11-year career with 82 homers and 445 RBI.
