Kevin Youkilis: The Man We Knew, Respected And Won't Forget

Kevin Youkilis will be remembered for many things, like his wacky batting stance and trademark goatee, but above all else, Youk will be remembered for being a top tier competitor who put his team, the Boston Red Sox, above himself.

Kevin Youkilis Update: David Ortiz Says It's Not Easy

After beating the Atlanta Braves 9-4 on Sunday afternoon to give the Boston Red Sox a 9-2 record in their last 11 contests, the mood was anything but light and jovial. The reason? Kevin Youkilis had been traded during the game to the Chicago White Sox.

While all the players had some sort of response either internally or to the media, David Ortiz is the only player to have been there for Youk's entire career.

In his nine seasons with the Red Sox, Oritz said the two were close, according to WEEI.com.

"It was emotional," Ortiz said. "He's my boy. I've been playing with Youk forever. To see him go like that is not easy. It's part of the game. It's like I told him, 'Go out and do your thing.' "

It's a tough day for Boston, even if it felt inevitable.

"How long was he here for, nine years? It doesn't happen every day. He was kind of mad and upset. I don't blame him. He knew it was coming, but it's still tough."

VIDEO: Kevin Youkilis' Final At Bat With The Boston Red Sox Sunday

Kevin Youkilis knew this day was coming, but even with ample time to prepare, his final at-bat as a member of the Boston Red Sox was still a highly emotional moment. Not just for him, but the loyal Red Sox fans, too, who had watched the beloved Youk come up through the team's farm system and develop into on of the best hitters in baseball, at least or a time.

Youkilis, in typical Youk fashion, ground it out for the Sox in his final game with the team, a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. Youkilis went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and receiving a well-deserved standing ovation from the Fenway faithful. Here are highlights from Youkilis' last hurrah in Boston, with his touching standing ovation at the end.

Youkilis batted .233 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 165 at bats this season for Boston.

Report: Kevin Youkilis Traded To White Sox

According to Rob Bradford, a clubhouse source has indicated that Kevin Youkilis has been traded to the Chicago White Sox.

There's no word yet on the details of the deal, but the writing has been on the wall for a while now with Youkilis, and with Bobby Valentine giving him a sentimental send-off in today's game based on word from Ben Cherington that a deal was in the works, it seems like the time has finally come.

Who the Red Sox will get in return remains to be seen, but earlier in the week the name Matt Thornton was being tossed around plenty. The Red Sox are not in need of a reliever, but the White Sox have a barren farm system and, if Thornton is coming over, that likely opens the Sox up to making trades with their overstocked relief corps, and relievers are always gold at the deadline.
