Carl Crawford Injury Update: Crawford's Return Set Back By Strained Left Elbow

As if the Boston Red Sox needed more bad news, Carl Crawford's rehabilitation from offseason wrist surgery just hit a setback.

Crawford announced Friday that he has a strained left elbow, an injury that is expected to push back his recovery at least one week. The 30-year old was set to try his hand this week as a designated hitter at extended spring training, but will be unable to do so due to his bothersome elbow.

The elbow began bothering him "a couple weeks" ago, Crawford said. When the pain got worse he was sent to Boston on Tuesday for an MRI which revealed the damage.

From the Providence Journal:

"It started with a little soreness, I tried to push through it and it got more sore and eventually it to the point where you can't even stand it anymore," Crawford said. "Just a little setback; hopefully I'll catch up."

"We're not putting a timetable on it yet," said Valentine. "He's going to be able to DH ASAP and in those games down here. I even think he could run around in the outfield and hand it off if we're worried about him throwing. The guys who are in charge of the rehab have to take control of that situation."
