Red Sox Trade Rumors 2012: Sox, Rockies Discussing Marco Scutaro

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Colorado Rockies are reportedly in talks with the Boston Red Sox to acquire shortstop Marco Scutaro in a possible trade. Renck originally reported the agreement as "close", but acknowledged that talks have simmered down a bit.

For the Rockies, they appear to be set on acquiring a veteran middle infielder to alongside All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki at second base. If acquired, Scutaro would bring above average defense along with a solid bat. In 2011 with the Red Sox, Scutaro hit a career high .299 with 7 homers and 54 RBI in 113 games played for Boston. Colorado currently has young Chris Nelson slotted to be their starting second baseman.

Meanwhile, this sort of move seems to be the Red Sox trying to move payroll. As demonstrated by their frugal tendencies this offseason, the Red Sox could be trying to free up some money on their payroll to possibly sign a starting pitcher or an outfielder. In October, Boston decided to exercise Scutaro's contract option, which will pay him $6 million in 2012.

If Scutaro were to be dealt, they would likely have to turn to Jose Iglesias, Mike Aviles, or newly signed Nick Punto as their starting shortstop next season. With Roy Oswalt still on the free agent market, the Red Sox may need to take that chance.
