Kevin Youkilis Placed On 60-Day Disabled List, Will Miss Rest Of Season

Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been placed on the 60-day Disabled List prior to Wednesday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles, effectively ending his season. Youkilis hit .258 with 17 home runs and 80 RBI in 120 games this season.

Youkilis' has had numerous ailments that have slowed him down in the second half of the season, suffering from back problems, bursitis in his hip and a sports hernia, which will likely require him to undergo surgery in the offseason.

While no date has been set yet, Youkilis is expected to undergo surgery as soon as possible to repair the sports hernia that ultimately prevented him from being able to return to the field in September. By undergoing surgery at the earliest available date, Youkilis will maximize the time he has for a rehab and offseason workout program in hopes of ensuring that he does not have to suffer a repeat of his health struggles of this season. (via WEEI)

Kevin Youkilis Diagnosed With Bursitis In Hip

Red_seat_medium

According to Terry Francona, Kevin Youkilis' exam back in Boston has revealed that the Red Sox third baseman is suffering from bursitis in his hip.

The Red Sox have some recent experience with bursitis, of course. David Ortiz endured bursitis in his heel back in late August, costing him a week of games before he was able to return.

Youkilis received an anti-inflammatory injection in his hip to help combat his injury, and while Terry Francona wasn't ready to rule out a return to the team in Tampa, it seems unlikely that the Sox will have their starting third baseman back before they return home to Boston.
