Red Sox Vs. White: Boston Takes Early 1-0 Lead On Jarrod Saltalamacchia's Homer

Stay connected for news and updates

The Red Sox have taken a 1-0 lead over the White Sox thanks to a solo-shot off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Tim Wakefield has been strong so far in pursuit of his 200th win, only allowing one baserunner his first time through the lineup when he hit Gordon Beckham. Juan Pierre has looked particularly baffled, twice striking out and not really coming close either time.

Gavin Floyd has been in similar form, sitting down the side on just nine pitches in the first. Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz have put some decent wood on the ball, but neither saw the productive results of Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Having worked the count full, fouling a number of pitches deep into the stands, Saltalamacchia finally got a pitch he could really kill: a hanging slider that went right into his wheelhouse. Salty turned on the pitch, and launched it well into the stands in right to put the Sox up 1-0.
