Mike Cameron After Being Released By Red Sox: 'Rest Assured I'll Be Back'

Mike Cameron was released by the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, telling The Boston Globe that the move was made because his part-time role resulted in his poor performance on the field.

"I need to sort some things out," he said. "But if all goes as planned, I'll be back playing. I haven't played much this year. Rest assured I'll be back. People think Father Time has got me. But it wasn't Father Time. It was not getting much of a chance to go out there and run around and play. It was a new experience [in Boston], but it's all good." (via WEEI)

Cameron was batting .149 with three home runs and nine RBI in 33 games this season. Cameron played a total of 81 games in Boston, batting .219 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in two seasons. In 17 seasons, Cameron has a career .249 batting average and has 1,666 hits, 272 home runs and 950 RBI.

The Epstein On Mike Cameron: 'We've Been Scratching Our Heads'

Mike Cameron came to Boston as a competent outfielder who had promise as an excellent fourth outfielder. However, that promise faded in his first year and he continued to be unproductive in year two, forcing the Boston Red Sox to pull the plug on Cameron, releasing him on Thursday.

Cameron was batting .149 with three home runs and nine RBI in 33 games this season. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein admitted that he was confused by Cameron's sudden decline.

"We've been scratching our heads. I'll take the hit on this one," said Epstein regarding the acquisition of Cameron and subsequent lack of production from the 38-year-old. "We try to be disciplined with trying to look for players in their primes when we bring them in. Sometimes, you just can't do that. Mike was still a productive player when we got him, but -- this is all speculation -- maybe because of his advanced age, despite the great shape he keeps himself in, he had the significant internal injury, the double hernia, double groin surgery this winter, maybe just made the recovery that much more difficult at his age." (via WEEI)

Mike Cameron Released, Yamaico Navarro Called Up From Pawtucket

Mike Cameron was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon, and the team has called up infielder Yamaico Navarro to take his place.

With the DFA, the Red Sox now have 10 days to rid themselves of Cameron, unless he accepts the assignment.

The Red Sox have 10 days to try and trade Cameron while putting him through waivers. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein suggested there is a slim chance the outfielder could accept an assignment to the minors if Cameron were to pass through waivers, not get dealt, and accept such a move. (via WEEI)

Navarro has spent time with the Red Sox before, playing 20 games with the team last season. Navarro had a batting average of .143 (6-for-42) and drove in five runs with Boston.

In Pawtucket, Navarro is batting .258 with five home runs and 13 RBI. In six minor league seasons, Navarro has a .280 batting average with 41 homers and 255 RBI.
