College Football Awards 2012: Boston College LB Kevin Pierre-Louis Named To Rotary Lombardi Watch List

Boston College Eagles linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis was named to the 2012 Rotary Lombardi watch list on Monday.

Pierre-Louis will try to follow in the footsteps of BC linebacker Luke Kuechly who won the award last season. Pierre-Louis made the freshman All-America team in 2010 and had 93 tackles. He had 74 tackles last season despite missing three games due to injury.

Here are the criteria to be eligible for the Lombardi Award:

• Offensive or defensive end-to-end down linemen who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball
• Linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

All candidates must be eligible to play college sports under the rules and regulations of the NCAA.

The candidates earned a place on the watch list by:

• Earning All-American honors last season
• Being named last season to their respective all-conference first team as determined by the conference's head coaches
• Being projected to be an All-American or first team all-conference player for the coming season
• Nomination approved by the nominations committee (via NCAA)

Pierre-Louis was also named to the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list this offseason.

College Football Awards 2012: Boston College LB Kevin Pierre-Louis Named To Nagurski Watch List

College football is right around the corner. Fans are starting to see a trickle of gridiron news this week with the release of preseason watch lists for the sport's major awards. On Thursday, the preseason list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy was released, featuring Boston College linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis.

The Nagurski Trophy is one of several awards recognizing the country's top defensive player. Pierre-Louis certainly possesses the qualifications to compete for that honor. This year will be his third season as the Eagles' starting outside linebacker, and he assumes a more prominent leadership role on the defense after Luke Kuechly bolted for the NFL.

In 2010, Pierre-Louis was a Freshman All-American, collecting 93 tackles. Last year, he missed three games with injury, but still finished second on the team with 73 tackles. Range is his game, and he can move effortlessly to find the ballcarrier.

Boston College Football Spring Game: Offense Beats Defense, 68-58

CHESTNUT HILL - Josh Bordner completed 8-of-18 passes and threw for 159 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the Boston College Eagles' annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Bordner's efforts helped lead the offense past the defense, 68-58, based off of a specialized scoring system.

"We're pleased with where we're at," said BC coach Frank Spaziani, who said that he liked what he saw in the scrimmage. "The guys were competing today. There's a lot of different guys that probably aren't going to [play] -- you know, a lot of walk-ons that were playing today. People made some plays, both on and off the field. It was a good spring game."

Bordner split time under center with junior quarterback Chase Rettig, who completed 13-of-23 passes for 120 yards, had one touchdown, one interception and was sacked twice. Mike Marscovetra (6-for-7, 75 yards, TD, INT, one sack), Dave Shinskie (2-for-5,32 yards, INT, one sack) and Christian Suntrup (0-for-1, two sacks) also saw time under center.

"We turned the ball over too much, everyone," said Rettig. "We've got some guys banged up. The spring has been really progressing nicely, so I think guys are looking forward to getting healthy and getting back here in the summer and keep progressing until we play Miami on December 1."

The Eagles' offense opened the game with a three-and-out and Rettig threw his first interception on his second drive of the game. Bordner also had an interception in the first quarter, and the Eagles had two fumbles in the early stages. Both picks came from Akeem Richardson, who had six tackles and led all defenders with four stops at halftime.

Bordner connected with freshman wideout Karim Zoungrana for a 66-yard touchdown down the left sideline to trim the defense's lead to 16-15. Rettig's only touchdown pass of the game came at 11:55 of the second quarter on a 31-yard strike to Alex Amidon up the middle, putting the offense on top 27-17.

Once again, Bordner found Zoungrana down the left sideline for his second and final touchdown -- a 31-yard pass with 8:31 left in the second -- to give the offense a 39-17 advantage. Soon after, a 37-yard field goal from Nate Freese put the offense up 46-21, and the two squads would head to the locker rooms with the offense leading 47-28 at the break. At the half, Rettig was 12-for-21 with 119 yards while Bordner was 7-for-15.

Moving ahead to the fourth quarter, Marscovetra would find Joe LaCorte for the second-longest touchdown pass of the day -- 43 yards -- to put the offense up 68-58 as time expired and the spring game came to a close.

Rolandan Finch led all Eagles running backs with 196 net yards on 27 carries. Paul Maglio had 42 rushing yards on 13 carries and Tahj Kimble, who sprained an ankle early in the game and was on crutches afterwards, had 13 net yards on five rushes. Jake Sinkovec had 24 yards on the ground on five carries.

Zoungrana caught four passes for 109 yards and finished with two scores (his 66-yard catch was the longest of the game) while LaCorte had three grabs for 56 yards and a score and Amidon registered two grabs for 44 yards. Freese made two field goals, one from 27 yards and another from 37 yards, and Nick Clancy led all defenders with 10 tackles.

Boston College opens the 2012 season on Sep. 1 at home against the Miami Hurricanes.
