Jason Terry Signing: Terry Says He Received No Offer From Dallas, Wants Ray Allen To Re-Sign With Boston

Free agent guard Jason Terry looks to be one step closer to signing with the Boston Celtics. Terry had said that he would give his old club, the Dallas Mavericks, until Wednesday to match the Celtics offer. In a phone interview with Fox Sports Florida on Wednesday, Terry revealed that Dallas had not sent him an offer. Without saying where he would go, Terry did say that he won't return to Dallas.

"It definitely won't be Dallas. They didn't offer (a contract)." (via Fox Sports Florida)

Terry has reportedly been offered a three-year, $15.675 million contract by Boston. Free agents are not allowed to sign contracts until July 11. While Terry is not sure where Celtics free agent guard Ray Allen will play next season, he did indicate that he would like Allen to re-sign with the Celtics.

Jason Terry Signing: Terry On Celtics 'I Just Love That They Have A Championship Pedigree'

Free agent guard Jason Terry would not be able to sign with the Boston Celtics not able to sign until July 11. Until then the Mavericks have a chance to layout a counter offer to what the Celtics are offering (reportedly $15.7 million over three seasons).

Terry said about the Mavericks potential counter, "I want to see what they come up with, but I'm not optimistic." And why might Terry choose Boston instead? "I just love that they have a championship pedigree. And I think their point guard (Rajon Rondo) is the best in the business at controlling both ends of the floor. And they've got Hall of Famers.'' (via Fox Sports)

Terry averaged 15.1 points, 3.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. Terry is a deep-threat who hit 2.2 three-pointers per game last season and shot 37.8% from behind the arc for Dallas. He's come off the bench the majority of the time the past five seasons but still averages more than 31 minutes per game.

NBA Free Agency Rumors 2012: Jason Terry, Celtics Close To Three-Year Deal, Mavericks Could Have Chance To Match

Free agent guard Jason Terry and the Boston Celtics are approaching agreement on a three-year contract, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. But the Celtics shouldn't count their chickens just yet.

Marc Stein of ESPN reports that Terry is still expected to give the Dallas Mavericks an opportunity to counter the deal, which is expected to net Terry $15.7 million over the next three seasons.

Though the Mavericks like Terry, who was a crucial piece to their 2011 NBA championship run, matching Boston's offer isn't a given. Dallas has spent the past couple seasons maneuvering to open cap space, and re-signing Terry would take away some of their flexibility.

If Terry does end up landing in Boston, it would be a coup for the Celtics, who desperately need scoring. Terry could also relieve some of Rajon Rondo's ball-handling abilities.

Jason Terry Signing: Terry Close To Joining Celtics; Ray Allen Gone?

Jason Terry is apparently very close to becoming the newest member of the Boston Celtics, according to a tweet from Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, who reports that sources of Y! Sports have said that Terry and the Celtics are in the final stages of a contract agreement. Terry, a veteran free agent guard, was linked to the Celtics in free agency.

Terry, who was 34 last season, averaged 17.1 points in 63 games -- only one of which he started. A bench specialist, Terry would bring a lot to a team like the Celtics, in need of all the scoring help they can get.

Of course, Terry is a shooting guard. So is Ray Allen. What all does that mean?

First, the reported signing of Terry could mean the end of the Allen era in Boston. However, the signing of Terry doesn't necessarily signal the end of Allen's tenure with the Celtics, as the team could bring Ray Ray back thanks to bird rights and give Terry a mid-level exception deal. Celtics coach Doc Rivers has made it clear that he would like to sign both.

No terms have been released on the Terry signing, which will make the picture clearer.

NBA Free Agency Rumors 2012: Jason Terry, Boston Celtics Finalizing Deal, According To Report

The Boston Celtics and Jason Terry are engaged in the final stages of discussion to bring the 34-year old guard to Boston, according to a report from Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

The deal does not necessarily preclude the Celtics from acquiring Ray Allen, but he might be turned off by the prospect of competing for playing time with both Terry and Avery Bradley.

Terms of Terry's deal have not been disclosed, which makes sense because nothing is final, but it is probable that he will sign for the mid-level exception. Danny Ainge said earlier this week that he expects the Celtics to be able to stay under the luxury tax threshold and have the full mid-level exception to spend.

Terry averaged 15.1 points and 3.6 assists per game last season for the Dallas Mavericks, connecting on 37.8 percent of his 3-point attempts. The Celtics have long been desperate for bench scoring, and Terry's one of the best in the NBA at filling that particular role.
