Jeff Green Qualifying Offer Withdrawn By Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics quietly withdrew their qualifying offer to free agent forward Jeff Green during the middle of December, making him an unrestricted free agent, general manager Danny Ainge confirmed to ESPN's Peter May.

Green could theoretically sign with another team today, but it's improbable that he will find a home soon -- he is scheduled for heart surgery on Monday to repair an aortic aneurysm, and the recovery will require that Green misses at least the rest of this season. It's possible but unlikely that another team could sign Green and stash him until he's ready to play.

The Celtics signed Green to a one-year, $9 million contract prior to the season, but the deal was voided after his heart condition led to a failed physical. By withdrawing their qualifying offer for Green, the Celtics surrendered their right to match any free agent offer he receives. They could still potentially use Green in a sign-and-trade deal.

Green would have been a restricted free agent after this season if the Celtics had not withdrawn their qualifying offer.
