Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron won the 2012 Selke Trophy which honors the best defensive forward in the NHL.
Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron won the Selke Trophy at the 2012 NHL Awards ceremony on Wednesday night. Bergeron edged out Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings and David Backes of the St. Louis Blues to claim the prize.
The Bruins center had 64 points this season, and, fitting of the award that honors the top defensive forward in the NHL, Bergeron also finished the year at plus-36. He had a mere 20 penalty minutes this season to go with 67 blocked shots and 55 takeaways.
His prowess in the faceoff circle also figured into his winning the award. Bergeron won almost 60 percent of his faceoffs this season while taking 34.6 percent of the team's faceoffs.
On special teams, he led the Bruins with an average of 1:48 minutes per game on the penalty kill.
