An otherwise slow first period was bookended by a phantom slashing penalty on Rich Peverley, which gave the Penguins an opportunity with the man advantage, and Evgeni Malkin cashed in with just 8.1 seconds remaining in the period, giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

The period took a while to get going, but once it did, Boston controlled the play until Derek Engelland took down David Krejci in the corner and, with the Bruins on a de facto penalty kill in their own zone, Peverley was called for slashing Malkin after he merely went over to play the body.

Krejci was assisted off the ice, but was able to walk down the tunnel on his own power - it seems like it was a skate issue and he should be back out for the second period.

Boston outshot Pittsburgh by a mark of 10-6 in the first, controlling most of the play.
