"At one point, I thought we would be playing all night here," said Roberto Luongo.
Torres managed to beat Tim Thomas (only barely; Thomas, although out of position, still almost recovered in time to make a miraculous save) with just 19 seconds left in the game, giving the Canucks a 1-0 series lead in the process.
"Our confidence is pretty high right now," said Torres, "but we know, like Kes (Kesler) said, it's just one game. We have to carry that into Game 2."
It was the first goal Thomas has allowed since Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, ending his scoreless streak at just under 128 minutes.
Game 2 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals is set for Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET.
