Despite beginning the tournament seeded fourth and sixth, Iona and Manhattan will play for the MAAC championship on Monday.

The madness has officially hit the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.

On Sunday, four teams remained in the semifinals: Top-seeded Niagara, No. 4 seed Iona, No. 6 seed Manhattan and No. 7 seed Fairfield.

The first game of the day pitted Niagara against Iona. Led by 20 points and 17 rebounds from David Laury, the Gaels pulled the upset with a 79-73 win. Trailing by one at halftime, Iona got hot midway through the second half and never looked back. Free throws and a couple of defensive stops sealed the deal down the stretch.

Lamont Jones had 17 points, while Taaj Ridley chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds.

In the later action, No. 6 Manhattan cruised to a 60-42 win over Fairfield. The Jaspers really dug in on the defensive end, forcing Fairfield to shoot just under 35 percent from the field. The Stags were also 0-for-9 from behind the three-point arc.

An updated look at the tournament bracket can be found here.

On Monday, Iona and Manhattan will play for the MAAC championship. The winner will go dancing at the NCAA Tournament, while the other will have to hope for an invitation to the NIT or other postseason event. Tipoff will come at 9 p.m. ET, with ESPN2 providing the television coverage.

With Wes Welker possibly on his way out in New England, the Patriots could look to add one of this year's most accomplished wide receivers.

The New England Patriots have featured one of the NFL's top offenses for the better part of a decade. While the unit did not miss a beat in 2012, the Pats do have a couple of players nearing the downslope of their career. Armed with the 29th overall pick at the 2013 NFL Draft, one recent mock draft has them taking a wide receiver in the first round.

For more on this story, visit Pats Pulpit.

According to Dane Brugler of CBS Sports, New England will take Tavon Austin with the 29th pick. Austin, a senior out of West Virginia, profiles as a strong replacement for Wes Welker.

Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia: With Wes Welker set for free agency, the Patriots might be looking for a new slot receiver and Tom Brady could do a lot with the versatile offensive ability of Tavon Austin.

This past season at WVU, Austin hauled in 114 receptions for 1,289 yards and 12 touchdowns. At just 5'9 and 174 pounds, he fits the prototypical mold of a speedy slot receiver.

The Patriots are set on the outside with Brandon Lloyd. When they are healthy, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez cause all kinds of problems for opposing defenses all over the field. Welker has been the glue guy on screens and slant routes for years in Foxboro, but it seems he may depart for more money this offseason as a free agent. That leaves a potential spot wide open for Austin.

If the Pats elect to go with someone other than a wide receiver in the first round, a defensive tackle or outside linebacker would make a lot of sense.

After starting off the year strong, Boston has hit the skids in recent weeks.

The Boston Celtics have struggled to score the ball in recent weeks. As a result, they've seen their standing in the Eastern Conference suffer, and now they have some work to do with a 14-16 record.

The latest round of NBA power rankings were released on Monday. On NBA.com, John Schumann has Boston ranked 19th, which is one spot back of where they were last week. Here is what Schumann had to say about the team, and what could happen in the coming days as the schedule picks up.

"Considering the state of the Nets, the Celtics' Christmas Day victory in Brooklyn doesn't look so great right now. And considering their three West Coast losses by a total of 69 points, it's long forgotten anyway. They're playing worse defense than they were in November, they're just a half game out of the Lottery and their next four games are against the Grizzlies, Pacers, Hawks and Knicks. Yikes."

ESPN dropped the Celtics two spots in their latest rankings, making them the 20th best team in the league right now. Marc Stein noted that the C's lost three games on the west coast by nearly 70 points, including a 22-point blow loss to Sacramento on Monday night.

It's pretty clear the Celtics have a lot of work to do if they hope to reach the postseason this year, even if they are playing in a weak Eastern Conference.

The Celtics have struggled to score consistently this season, and it's being reflected in the win-loss column.

The past week was not beneficial to a veteran-laden Boston Celtics team. They needed overtime to beat the Mavericks at home, and were then blown out on the road by the Rockets and Spurs. Boston has really struggled to score consistently and at an efficient rate in recent weeks, and it's dropped them a couple of rungs in power rankings.

According to SB Nation's latest rankings, the Celtics dropped one spot to No. 12 overall. Compared to other sites, this is actually a solid ranking for a team that most have in the 15-20 range.

John Schuhmann of NBA.com dropped Paul Pierce and Co. five spots from 11th to 16th. He notes the struggles the team has had on offense, and that they're even struggling to score against teams that aren't great defensively.

As for ESPN, Marc Stein has the C's ranked 18th after being 14th last week.

Boston has a couple of winnable games on the schedule this week. They'll head to Chicago and take on a Bulls team that still doesn't have Derrick Rose on Tuesday night. They will then return home to welcome in the Cavaliers on Wednesday, as well as the Bucks on Friday.

Despite a couple of rumors early in the offseason, the Red Sox are unlikely to deal Ellsbury.

Jacoby Ellsbury has been a tough player to crack the past couple seasons. When healthy and locked in at the plate, he is an All-Star caliber outfielder who can anchor the top-half of a lineup. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, Ellsbury has been unable to consistently avoid the disabled list; for the second time in three seasons, Ellsbury played fewer than 75 games in 2012.

There were rumors earlier in the offseason that the Red Sox could look to trade Ellsbury should the right deal come along. That is no longer the case, though, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman tweeted on Monday that Boston had been "rebuffing" any trade offers for the 28-year-old outfielder in recent weeks, and that it would take nothing short of a boatload of talent to deal him.

One of the more enticing options with Ellsbury is that he could bring a first round draft pick next year should he sign elsewhere as a free agent. For a front office that is determined to rebuild the franchise, adding a first round pick could go a long way into making the Sox a perennial title contender.

Taking a look at the big games on the NFL schedule next week, including a showdown with the Patriots and 49ers.

The homestretch of the NFL season is finally here. While most teams in the AFC have locked up a playoff berth, the NFC still appears to be wide open. There are plenty of big games on the slate for Week 15, and they could have a big impact on playoff positioning.

The big game on Sunday will feature Tom Brady and the Patriots welcoming in the San Francisco 49ers. This could potentially be a Super Bowl preview, and it'll pit one of the NFL's elite offenses against a stellar defense. Kickoff for this one is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 16.

Another key matchup will feature the Giants and Falcons. New York smoked Atlanta in the playoffs last year, and you can bet Matt Ryan and Co. would like to do nothing more than make a statement against the defending world champions. Kickoff from the Georgia Dome is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Examining the college hockey rankings as of Dec. 10.

The Boston College Eagles have been near the top of the NCAA hockey polls all season long. Following another strong week on the ice, BC has moved back up to No. 1 in the latest Division I rankings. The Eagles fell to the second spot last week, but a couple of big wins and a loss from New Hampshire helped them jump to the top.

With Boston College and New Hampshire holding down the top two spots, it's the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 3. Minnesota and Miami (Ohio) round out the top five.

Another school in the Boston area, Boston University, moved up one spot in the polls to place sixth this week. The Terriers hold a slight lead over Western Michigan. North Dakota is eighth, Quinnipiac moved up four spots to rank ninth, and Dartmouth rounded out the top 10.

As for other schools in the Boston area, Harvard ranks 18th despite playing just eight games this season.

Examining the latest round of NCAA hockey rankings for the week of December 3.

The college hockey season is in full swing now. Following another busy week of action, Boston College, which was been ranked No. 1 for much of the year, dropped down a slot in the polls.

The new top team in the country is New Hampshire, which captured 31 of the 50 first-place votes. UNH finished with 12 points more than BC this week, and it appears these two could be in for another swap in the coming weeks. The two schools have combined to drop just three games this season.

As for the rest of the top 10, Miami, Minnesota and Notre Dame holds spots three, four and five. Denver came in sixth, while Boston University rose two spots to enter this week's poll at No. 7. BU is tied with Western Michigan with 644 points. North Dakota and Dartmouth rounded out the top 10.

The only other school from the Boston area to make an appearance in the poll was Harvard, which ranks 20th in the country. The complete top 20 can be found here.

With the regular season over, here's a look back on a wild year of Big East football.

The college football regular season has wrapped up, and now it's time for bowl games. It was mostly a disappointing year for the Big East, although a few schools will be bowling this month. Let's take one final look at the standings.

Four teams tied at the top with a 5-2 record. Louisville, Cincinnati, Rutgers and Syracuse all had fine years, although it was the Cardinals and Scarlett Knights that played for the conference crowd last week. Louisville came out on top, and now they're headed to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans to take on the Florida Gators. All four of these teams are bowl eligible, and so are the Pittsburgh Panthers, which made a late-season push to finish with a 6-6 record.

As for the rest of the league, Temple won just two Big East games and finished the season with a 4-7 record. Connecticut when 2-5 against conference foes and completed the year at 5-7. South Florida finished in last place with just one win.

Examining the latest round of bowl game projections.

The past week in college football shook up the BCS rankings. For the first time since 2007, both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams (Kansas State, Oregon) lost on the same day. For teams that were likely going to be left on the outside looking in at the BCS National Championship, there is now hope.

The latest round of bowl game projections from Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has Notre Dame facing off with Alabama for the title on January 7. The Fiesta Bowl will pit Kansas State against Stanford. Two storied programs will battle for the Sugar Bowl when LSU takes on Oklahoma. With the game being played in New Orleans, one would think the Tigers would have a serious home crowd advantage.

The Orange Bowl would pit Florida State against Louisville. Palm believes FSU will win the ACC, while the Cardinals will take the Big East. Finally, the Oregon Ducks will battle Nebraska for the Rose Bowl.
