The Boston Red Sox snapped their seven-game losing streak on Tuesday night -- during which they'd been outscored by an astonishing 58-16 -- with their victory over the Seattle Mariners, 4-3. Now they'll look to embark on a winning streak as they close out their series with the Mariners on Wednesday night.

Aaron Cook will take the mound for Boston, his first start since going just over two innings in last Friday's 20-2 shellacking at the hands of the Oakland A's. The loss dropped his record to just 3-8 on the season and raised his ERA to 5.35. The right-hander hasn't recorded a victory since late June.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been placed on the 15-day DL as he continues to deal with an injury to his right Achilles. Complicating matters, the 36-year-old who has a career batting average of .285 with 401 homeruns and 1,326 RBI's, will be a free-agent at the end of the season.

But Ortiz isn't worried that his injury will affect him in free-agency, he's just worried about doing whatever it takes to heal (which includes PRP therapy and shockwave treatment) and getting back on the field according to WEEI.com:

"Today's days, it's hard to get good players in the free agency market. Pretty much most of the good players are locked up for years, unless you go out and trade. It's hard to get a 30-home run hitter," he said. "I'm not really worried about [how the injury will impact free agency] because it's not something that I need to go and get surgery. You know what I'm saying? Surgery means it's different from what it is. My tendon is not the baddest it can be to need surgery or anything like that. But I've got to be careful."

At 33-years-old and entering his 11th season in the NFL, New England Patriots veteran wide receiver Deion Branch is engaged in an intense battle to earn a wide receiver spot and make the team's final 53-man roster for the 2012 season.

Early on, Branch had limited participation in camp but he's since resumed competing in full practices and after Monday night's performance against the Philadelphia Eagles (three catches, 51 yards), Branch drew praise from head coach Bill Belichick, according to a Telegram.com report:

"I thought he competed well," Belichick said during yesterday's conference call. "He had three big catches in tight coverage and traffic, and that's always good to see. He's worked hard in camp."

To his credit, Branch has maintained a positive attitude and relishes the challenge of trying to make the final cut:

"Every year, man," he said, "I'm going to come out here - and that's the fun part about the game -- you get to come out here and compete against your teammates, score against the defense and also do some things with the guys you're in the same room with. Overall, I love it, man. I love it."

The New England Patriots trimmed three players from their training camp roster.

The New England Patriots fell to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night in their second NFL preseason game. As the team works to whittle its roster to 53, several changes were made to the Pats' depth chart on Tuesday, according to a report appearing in TheLedger.com.

The most notable of which is defensive tackle Jonathan Fanene being cut by New England. In March, the Patriots agreed to a three-year deal with Fanene that was worth close to $12 million when they signed him as a free-agent.

He had been listed as second on the depth chart behind Vince Wilfork.

Free-agent rookie Kyle Hill also was cut from the Patriots. The offensive lineman was listed as second on the depth chart at left tackle behind Nate Solder and was fourth on the right tackle depth chart behind Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon and Matt Kopa.

Place kicker Chris Koepplin was also released by the Patriots.

The death of Johnny Pesky hit Boston Red Sox nation hard when his passing was made public on Monday. The 93-year-old Pesky had been associated with the Red Sox for 61 of his 73 years of involvement with Major League Baseball with the last 44 years being continuous.

Known for his loyalty and exuberance for the game of baseball, in an interview with MLB.com, current Red Sox players David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia spoke of their fondess for Pesky and how much he'll me missed around the organization

Said Ortiz:

"I've been in this organization for the last 10 years and Johnny is what the Red Sox would call the franchise," said David Ortiz. "It comes down to this. When you talk about the Red sox, you talk about Johnny Pesky and not being able to have him around physically anymore, this is something hard to deal with. It's very devastating to find out that he passed away."

Pedroia adds:

"He was the best," said Dustin Pedroia. "Every day you'd come in, he'd always put a smile on your face. He'd always joke around with you and make sure you were focused. It was fun. I remember my rookie year, he'd always give me a hard time and give me stories about Ted Williams and you'd always give him a hard time back. When you think of the Red Sox, you think of Johnny. He always treated everyone great. We're going to miss him."

To honor Pesky, the team will wear black arm bands on their road uniforms and for their home and alternate jerseys, the players will wear a black patch with Pesky's No. 6 in white.

Second-year point guard E'Twaun Moore is currently in Las Vegas playing for the Boston Celtics in the NBA's summer league. The team has until Sunday to decide whether or not to guarantee his contract for the 2012-2013 season or he'll become an unrestricted free-agent.

According to Moore, neither he nor his agent haven't had any discussions with regard to his future with the team, but to his credit, he hasn't let any of this affect or distract him. He's just focused on competing hard in summer league and trying to get better, according to a report by the Boston Herald:

"We haven't talked about it at all, but they don't have to," Moore said. "I understand what's happening. I know they've got until Sunday. That's just a few days away, so I just want to keep playing and hope for the best and things will work out."

Celtics GM, Danny Ainge, offered high praise for Moore and his comments could lead one to believe that Moore will be back in Boston next season:

"I like how E'Twaun's playing," Ainge said. "I like how he's performed in the summer league. I like how he performed last year in short minutes. I like how he carries himself. He can shoot, he can handle (the ball), he can defend.

"He's just a complete, solid player and a top-notch kid."
