Chandler Whitmer was erratic for the UConn Huskies, throwing three interceptions despite topping the 100 passing yard plateau, and the N.C. State Wolfpack squeaked out a 10-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.
Whitmer finished 15-of-27 for 204 yards and did not throw an interception for the second straight week. Lyle McCombs, who rushed for the Huskies' lone touchdown of the game (a five-yard scoring rush with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter), had 60 rushing yards on 20 carries. Nick Williams had three catches for 59 yards for the Huskies (1-1).
Mike Glennon completed 15-of-30 passes and recorded 204 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Quintin Payton had three grabs for 48 yards and both Tobais Palmer and Bryan Underwood had 46 receiving yards. Underwood had the touchdown catch for N.C. The UConn Huskies are set to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field.
UConn was as dominant as expected in their season opener against the UMass Minutemen, who were playing their first game at the FBS level in quite some time.
The Huskies rolled UMass, winning 37-0 while gaining 372 yards compared to just 59. UConn was especially impressive against the run, an area of its defense that gave up a paltry three yards on 24 carries.
Sophomore Chandler Whitmer looked somewhat average however, throwing for 219 yards while being picked off twice. Whitmer was helped out by his running back Lyle McCombs, who gained 84 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground.
The Wolfpack was disappointing in their debut, losing 35-21 to the Tennessee Volunteers in the Georgia Dome. Mike Glennon was especially subpar, tossing four interceptions that sealed his team's fate. Junior Quintin Payton was a bright spot for N.C. State, racking up 129 receiving yards on just four catches.
