Hoomanawanui was a fifth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft for the St. Louis Rams, but never made much of an impact in the first two years. Due to that, the Rams decided to cut bait with him, leading to Hoomanawanui landing on the Washington Redskins' practice squad before signing with New England, according to ESPN.com.
By adding Hoomanawanui to the team (provided he passes his physical), it's expected Visanthe Shiancoe is headed to the injured reserve list to open up a roster spot.
With stars like Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez already manning the tight end position in New England, Hoomanawanui is certainly not going to see much playing time. However, he does provide a little bit of depth and perhaps a body on special teams.
