Olympic Games 2012: Dana Vollmer Sets World Record In 100M Butterfly, Wins Gold Medal

Dana Vollmer set the world record in the 100-meter butterfly on her way to winning a gold medal on Sunday.Vollmer was ahead at the turn and hit the wall in 55.98 seconds to knock 0.08 off the earlier record, which was set by opponent Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. Sjostrom came in fourth on Sunday.

Vollmer, who failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, had set an Olympic record in Saturday morning's heats. With this record, Vollmer becomes the first woman in Olympic history to break the 56-second mark.

For Americans hoping to see this record breaking performance by Vollmer, check out the NBC tape delay of the event, which is scheduled to air later Sunday night.
