The Red Sox fell to the White Sox 7-5 Tuesday night despite a late rally which gave them life in the last two innings.
The fault of this loss will rest solely on the shoulders of Jon Lester, who once again came out empty when the team needed him. For the fourth straight game Lester would surrender runs in the first, offering up a one-out walk and single before Paul Konerko topped off a ball perfectly placed down the first base line for an RBI double. With Alex Rios dropping a single into center immediately thereafter, the White Sox pulled ahead 2-0.
The Red Sox were initially up to the challenge against Phil Humber, however. Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford each singled and stole a base to bring one run around and put a man in scoring position for Adrian Gonzalez, who hit a ringing line shot up the middle to even the score out at 2-2.
From there, Humber would settle down while Lester did anything but. After giving up a wall ball single to Alexei Ramirez, Lester surrendered an RBI double to Alejandro De Aza in the second to put the Red Sox behind again. Mike Aviles denied a run with a great diving stop up-the-middle in the third, but the fourth was the deciding frame, as Lester put two men on and then served up a meatball to Kevin Youkilis. The former Red Sox third baseman did not miss his opportunity to make his old club pay, launching a three-run shot into the Monster seats.
While Junichi Tazawa would manage to hold the White Sox to just one run in the next four innings, it wouldn't be until the eighth that the Sox made any noise. An infield single from Carl Crawford set him up to score again on a Will Middlebrooks base hit, and then up came Kelly Shoppach in place of Jarrod Saltalamacchia to face the left-handed Matt Thornton. A 2-1 pitch came over the middle of the plate, and Shoppach smashed it over the Monster to make it 7-5.
Unfortunately, while Franklin Morales was able to hold the ChiSox down in the ninth, the Sox offense did not make another appearance, going down 1-2-3 to end the game.
