Red Sox Vs. Orioles Final Score: Clay Buchholz' Complete Game Shutout Lifts Sox To 7-0 Victory

The Red Sox finally have their home victory over the Baltimore Orioles after a complete game shutout from Clay Buchholz, supported by an early attack against Brian Matusz, proved more than enough to lift the Sox past their division opposition, 7-0.

While Clay Buchholz started the game with some inconsistent command in the first, it was just about the only weakness he would show all night. A double play would prove sufficient to erase leadoff singles in the first and third, while Buchholz managed to work around a one-out single turned into a double by Darnell McDonald in the second to keep the Orioles off the board early.

Brian Matusz would not prove so capable under pressure. Struggling to find the strike zone all night, the Orioles' young lefty would load the bases in both the first and second innings, with four walks between the two frames. In the first, it was Adrian Gonzalez who got the Sox on the board, hitting a sharp ground ball down the first base line for a two-run double. The scoring in the second inning, on the other hand, were thanks in large part to Baltimore's Robert Andino, who airmailed a double play throw to first, leading to another run rather than a second out.

Brian Matusz would leave the game after a leadoff single in the third. For a third straight inning, the Sox would pick up a pair of runs, building their lead to 6-0, where it would stay for most of the rest of the game, as Clay Buchholz continued to roll right along. After the three hits in three innings to start the game, Buchholz would not allow another hit until the eighth. The only real difficulty he would face came in the fifth, when he hit two batsmen. A double play would erase one, however, and a Robert Andino strike out would end the inning. With the Orioles only managing to pick up the one walk off Buchholz in the ninth, the 27-year-old righty finished off the game and solidified his return to form.
