Quarterfinals in the 2012 French Open wrapped up on Wednesday at Roland Garros. Semifinal matches are all set, and will begin on Friday. Winners on Wednesday included David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova.
Nadal, ranked second in the world, topped No. 12 Nicolas Almagro in three sets. Ferrer had the day's lone upset, as the world's sixth-ranked player beat No. 4 Andy Murray in four sets.
Second-ranked Sharapova cruised past No. 23 Kaia Kanepi in two sets. Kvitova need just two sets get past Yaroslava Shvedova.
Quarterfinal action starts on Friday. Ferrer's prize for his win is his 16th matchup against Nadal on a clay court; Nadal has never lost in those matches. The other men's semifinal match could be one for the ages with No. 1 Novak Djokovic taking on No. 3 Roger Federer.
On the women's side, Sharapova and Kvitova square off against each other. No. 6 Samantha Stosur takes on No. 21 Sara Errani.
