Red Sox Vs. Orioles Live Blog: Inning-By-Inning Updates For Game 2

The Red Sox are looking to even the series up at 1-1 and regain some of the cushion between them and .500 as they take on the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night.

We'll keep you up-to-date on all the action as it goes down in Fenway Park.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, Final -- The Sox go quietly in the ninth, and fall back to .500 in a game where they pretty clearly outplayed their opponents. What a depressing night in Fenway Park.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, Mid 9th -- Vicente Padilla gets through a quick ninth in relief of Josh Beckett, who seems to have cramped up on the bench in between innings. What's important now, though, is that the Sox need at least one run from the bottom of their lineup to avoid falling to .500.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, End 8th -- Another pair of baserunners comes to naught for the Red Sox, as Will Middlebrooks can manage only a shallow fly ball and Scott Podsednik (having pinch run for Adrian Gonzalez) a ground ball with Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz on base via the walk.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, Mid 8th -- Another 1-2-3 frame has Beckett seemingly in line for a complete if incredibly frustrating game. He's got two earned runs to his name when he arguably should have none, and a loss coming his way if the Sox can't fight back in these last couple of innings left to them.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, End 7th -- The Red Sox waste a huge chance after leadoff singles from Adrian Gonzalez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. A Darnell McDonald bunt succeeds in moving the runners along, but Marlon Byrd goes down swinging on four pitches, and Mike Aviles pops the ball up behind first base to end the threat.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, Mid 7th -- Josh Beckett doesn't really give the Orioles the chance to get lucky in the seventh, striking out two batters around a bloop single in a scoreless inning.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, End 6th -- The Sox continue to hit better than the Orioles, but continue to get nothing out of it. A line drive back up the middle from Kevin Youkilis goes for a base hit, but despite a hard shot off the bat of Will Middlebrooks, the Sox get no more out of the middle of their lineup, leaving the Orioles still up by one.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1, Mid 6th -- It's one of those innings that makes baseball so wonderful at times and so frustrating at others. Tonight, we are squarely in the latter of the two categories. Two ground balls put runners on the corners with nobody out, and a cutter in on the hands of Robert Andino is cuffed out into right field for an RBI single. Two more ground balls get the Sox the three outs they need, but allow another run to come in, giving the Orioles the lead. The only hard hit ball of the inning, of course, went for the double play.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, End 5th -- The run of hard contact comes to an end, with Wei-Yin Chen picking up three easy outs against the bottom of the lineup.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, Mid 5th -- Josh Beckett just keeps right on rolling, recording another 1-2-3 inning against the middle of Baltimore's lineup. His fastball is pinpoint, tonight, and both of his off-speed offerings have been able to get swings-and-misses so far. It's no wonder that he's faced 15 batters in 5 innings.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, End 4th -- The contact keeps coming off of Wei-Yin Chen, if not the results. David Ortiz, Will Middlebrooks, and Adrian Gonzalez all hit hard shots off the lefty starter, but J.J. Hardy is positioned perfectly for Ortiz' smash, and Gonzalez manages to hit it just close enough to Mark Reynolds for the first baseman to make the grab in the air, leaving only Middlebrooks' to go for a deserved hit.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, Mid 4th -- Josh Beckett gets three ground balls of varying success. The no-hitter comes to an end on the first, as Endy Chavez manages to get one through the left side of the infield, but the second one keeps Beckett facing the minimum, as J.J. Hardy hits into the double play. Adam Jones makes it three straight and another 1-2-3 inning, though it is perhaps with the benefit of a lucky call, as Mike Aviles' throw brings Youkilis into the air before he comes back down to the bag. It seems like he lands after the runner reach, but the umpire gives Boston the call, and the Orioles are retired.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, End 3rd -- The Sox get on the board thanks to the bottom of their lineup, in particular the returning Darnell McDonald. Getting a fastball over the outside part of the plate, McDonald plants it off the Monster for a leadoff double, and moves to third on a flared single to right by Marlon Byrd. The Sox only manage to turn the 1st-and-3rd, no outs situation into one run on a Mike Aviles sacrifice fly, but it's enough to give them the lead for now.

Red Sox 0, Orioles 0, Mid 3rd -- Josh Beckett has another 1-2-3 inning, and so far it's the best of his night. Wilson Betemit at least makes him work, running the count full before being run up on a borderline pitch on the outside corner. The strikeout of Ryan Flaherty is a bit more convincing, as the Baltimore left fielder goes flailing at an 0-2 curveball that breaks down and out of the zone before Robert Andino hits a routine ground ball to third to end the inning.

Red Sox 0, Orioles 0, End 2nd -- Will Middlebrooks hits a hard smash off the glove of Robert Andino at second to give the Sox their first baserunner of the night, but Jarrod Saltalamacchia just narrowly misses extending the inning, as Wilson Betemit charges in to make a nice play on a chopper to third for the final out.

Red Sox 0, Orioles 0, Mid 2nd -- Beckett's hot start continues, with a strikeout of Chris Davis highlighting a second 1-2-3 inning, and Will Middlebrooks putting an exclamation mark on it by diving to his right to snag a low line drive to third base.

Red Sox 0, Orioles 0, End 1st -- The Sox make Wei-Yin Chen work a little harder than the Orioles did Beckett, with each batter seeing at least four pitches, but the results are the same: three outs, no baserunners as we head to the top of the second inning.

Red Sox 0, Orioles 0, Mid 1st -- Josh Beckett gets off to a very quick start as he records an easy 1-2-3 inning against the top of the Baltimore lineup. Endy Chavez, swinging at the second pitch of the game, gives Beckett the most trouble, hitting a fairly deep fly ball to center field, but still not one that Marlon Byrd has any trouble putting away. With an easy ground ball and fly ball forthcoming, Beckett finishes the inning on just seven pitches.
