I'll Have Another Retired With Tendinitis: 2012 Belmont Stakes Loses Triple Crown Hopeful

I'll Have Another was retired on Friday after doctors found the beginning stages of tendinitis in the front leg, trainer Doug O'Neill said during a press conference on Friday.

Already the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, I'll Have Another was supposed to contend for a triple crown at Saturday's 2012 Belmont Stakes. Instead, the horse will never race again.

"This is extremely tough for all of us. Though it's far from tragic, no one died or anything like that, it's extremely disappointing. I feel so sorry for the whole team. We've had such an amazing run," said O'Neill.

Though I'll Have Another still could have raced at the Belmont and is expected to be fine after a three-to-six month recovery period, his team decided to use caution in deference to the horse's safety.

I'll Have Another Scratched From Belmont Stakes, Says Trainer Doug O'Neill

There will be no quest for history Saturday during the 2012 Belmont Stakes.

Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another pulled out of the race reportedly due to an undisclosed issue, as trainer Doug O'Neill told the Dan Patrick Show on Friday.

A press conference has been scheduled for 1 p.m. to divulge more information on I'll Have Another, which might have unknowingly run its final race in the Preakness.

O'Neill said that having to withdraw from the race was "a bummer," but "far from tragic."

Media Roundup: NBC Hopes For Triple Crown In Belmont Stakes

I'll Have Another is chasing history as the horse needs only one more win at the 2012 Belmont Stakes to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 2008. NBC will televise the race, and as usual, they're pulling out all the stops.

Belmont Stakes 2012: Underdogs Confident About Upset Bid

Upsets tend to be a regular feature in the Belmont Stakes. More than a few Triple Crown hopefuls have seen their efforts derailed at the New York track since Affirmed became the last horse to pull off one of the most prized feats in all of professional sports. Odds currently favor I'll Have Another to be the 12th Triple Crown winner, but there are a number of challengers waiting in the wings.

My Adonis, the latest horse to join the field, is currently at 20-1, but owners George and Lori Hall and trainer Kelly Breen have some experience with upsets in the Belmont Stakes. Their horse Ruler On Ice won last year's race at 24-1.

Odds give Dullahan the likeliest chance of any horse in the field of 12 to upset. Owner Jerry Crawford and trainer Dale Romans expressed confidence in their horse's ability to spoil the 12th Triple Crown bid since 1978. "I'll be surprised if we don't win," said Romans.

Belmont Stakes 2012: Alpha Drops Out Of Race, I'll Have Another Still Favored To Win Triple Crown

I'll Have Another will face one fewer opponent in his bid for the Triple Crown, as Daily Racing Form reports that Alpha has dropped out of the race. The horse developed a fever, and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin explained the reason for pulling the horse from the race:

“It’s just not the thing to do,” said McLaughlin, who discussed the situation with Godolphin Racing manager Simon Crisford. “It’s a demanding race, the mile and a half. We need to be 110 percent and we’re not.”

McLaughlin said future plans for Alpha were not yet determined.

Alpha joins Creative Cause and Bodemeister in skipping the 2012 Belmont Stakes. Before dropping out the odds on an Alpha victory were 15/1, so the lineup of major contenders is unchanged. I'll Have Another is still the favorite, with Union Rags close behind.

Belmont Stakes 2012: I'll Have Another Avoids Collision During Training

Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another avoided a collision scare during practice on Thursday at Belmont Park (via CBS New York).

I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill said that a horse got loose and tore up the rail in the direction which his horse was walking with stable pony Lava Man. The horse, later identified as maiden filly Isleta, had thrown her rider before running toward I'll Have Another. I'll Have Another's exercise rider, Jonny Garcia, said he felt the horse graze his boot as it went in between his horse and the rail.

After the incident, O'Neill said that his stomach was "still a little twisted."

I'll Have Another will try to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 when the Belmont Stakes is run on June 9.

Belmont Stakes 2012: Trainer Doug O'Neill: 'I'm Not Planning On Breezing I'll Have Another'

I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill talked about preparations for the 2012 Belmont Stakes on Wednesday and recounted a discussion he had with 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew's trainer Billy Turner.

That conversation with Turner turned to the subject of breezing.

"I had asked him about breezing, because I'm not planning on breezing I'll Have Another," O'Neill said. "He said he only breezed Seattle Slew twice between the Preakness and Belmont because he needed to take the edge off him, because he was such a high energy horse. As you see I'll Have Another is a pretty mellow horse, really.

"It was a great conversation and I let him know how much I appreciated him sharing his experience with us." (via Blood Horse).

I'll Have Another is trying to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. Between going to see the Kings and Devils contest for the Stanley Cup and throwing out the first pitch at a Yankees-Mets game, I'll Have Another's crew has a busy schedule off the track while taking it easy on the track before the race.

2012 Belmont Stakes: PETA Wants Surveillance For I'll Have Another

I'll Have Another trainer Doug O'Neill is currently facing a 45-day suspension when it was discovered that one of his horses had excess level of total carbon dioxide which is an illegal practice. With this information, PETA has decided to get involved and request that I'll Have Another be placed on a 24-hour watch.

The request was sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo because the state recently took control of the New York Racing Association. PETA wants this request due to O'Neill's background as a trainer:

"Doug O'Neill's shocking record of drug violations risks horses' lives and damages the already tarnished image of thoroughbred racing," says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. "Governor Cuomo can put substance behind his promises by telling racing officials not to allow I'll Have Another out of their sight for a minute."

PETA also included other requests which include controls on medication, housing in a secure barn, blood testing and having food and water supplied by a third-party source.

Belmont Stakes 2012: Mark Valeski Could Be Out, Leaving I'll Have Another With One Less Challenger

One of I'll Have Another's challengers at the 2012 Belmont Stakes, Mark Valeski, is reportedly doubtful for the race.

Mark Valeski has not worked out since winning the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park on May 12. Larry Jones, Mark Valeski's trainer has some questions about the energy level of his horse and about the three-year-old colt's entrance in the Belmont Stakes.

"It's looking like the Belmont is more and more doubtful," Jones said. (via Blood Horse)

A more likely next race for Mark Valeski could be the Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) on June 30, according to Jones. The draw for the Belmont Stakes is June 6.

I'll Have Another has already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and will try to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 at the Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Stakes 2012: I'll Have Another Dealing With Drug Questions

A horse might win the Triple Crown for the first time since Affirmed did it in 1978. Why wouldn't there be drug rumors?

Following another brilliant performance by I'll Have Another to beat Bodemeister in the Preakness Stakes, talk of drug usage has started to swirl significantly.

I'll Have Another's trainer, Doug O'Neill, has been under siege for supposedly supplying the horse with chemical help. O'Neill has strongly denied all of the rumors being lobbed his way.

"We play by the rules," O'Neill said, according to SI.com. "It's all about the horse. We're going to focus on the horse. I think we've got a horse and a team that, with a little bit of luck, will have an unbelievable time in three weeks."

O'Neill has also dismissed talk that I'll Have Another has received a "milkshake", also known as a combination of bicarbonate soda, sugar and electrolytes.

"I swear on my kids' eyes I never milkshaked a horse," O'Neill said nine days before the Preakness. "We had some people in charge of California racing I think didn't like a few of us that were doing well. Anyway, it's all being heard by the courts and I'm very confident everything will be fine."

It's truly a shame all of this background noise has to play into what could be an amazing finish to the Triple Crown at Belmont.
