There were no hometown heroics Sunday at the All England Club, but history was made as Roger Federer earned his seventh Wimbledon crown by defeating Andy Murray in four sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4). Federer's championship effort helped him tie Pete Sampras' all-time mark at Wimbledon and added to his already record-setting number of major victories -- now at 17.
Meanwhile, the hometown hero, Murray, failed to become the first British-born champion in decades. His effort, however, was rewarded with a lot of cheers from fans. The support led to a emotional runner-up speech by Murray, who broke down into tears.
In the end, Federer will regain the world's No. 1 ranking on Monday and will move into another tie with Sampras for 286 non-consecutive weeks with the top ranking.

The 2012 Wimbledon Final between six-time champion Roger Federer and Great Britain's Andy Murray has, as expected, been delayed by rain and is currently undergoing a roof-closing process. The much anticipated match is tied at one set apiece, as Murray took the first set 6-4, while Federer answered with a second set victory of 7-5. The third set is tied a one game apiece with Federer leading 40-0 love in the third game.
The match is expected to be delayed for about 30 minutes and will resume around noon ET, as the roof at the All England Club will close and then the court then needs to be become climatized -- a process which helps limit the moisture inside the now enclosed stadium. The positive about the delay is that it will be the only one the Wimbledon Final will encounter and the match will be finished Sunday.

Sunday marks the 13th and final day of Wimbledon 2012, which will conclude with the men's championship match between No. 3 Roger Federer and No. 4 Andy Murray at 9 a.m. ET.
Federer will attempt to win his seventh Wimbledon title, while Murray is looking to represent his home country of England by winning his first ever major.
Federer and Murray, despite their high rankings and previous successes, were not expected to make it this far. Federer upset the world's top-ranked player, Novak Djokivic, in four sets to advance to the final. Djokovic was the defending champion at Wimbledon.
Murray, meanwhile, was aided by the early exit of No. 2 ranked Rafael Nadal, who lost in the second round of the tournament.

Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title Sunday at the All England Club, defeating Poland's Agnieska Radwanska in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Williams was absolutely dominant in the first set, winning 87 percent of her first serve points in the first set. Serena looked like she was set to cruise to a straight set championship over Radwanska, but a short rain delay after the first set looked to settle Radwanska and starting attacking Williams in the second set. Radwanska was finally able to break Williams and force a third set.
Williams and Radwanska held serve through the first four games of the third set, but Williams was able to break Radwanska to take a 3-2 lead and from there cruised to a 6-2 third set win to clinch the championship.
With today's win, Williams now has 14 career Grand Slam titles, eight behind Steffi Graf's record 22 titles in the Open Era.

The 2012 Wimbledon Tennis Championships are getting down to the finals, and Saturday sees Serena Williams pursue her fifth Wimbledon title in the Ladies' singles draw. Full television coverage and streaming coverage information is below.
Williams, sixth seed in the tournament, will face No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the final match. Williams is heavily favored. Radwanska has revealed she is suffering from an upper respiratory ailment, and that's a difficult condition to be in when facing someone playing like Williams has been playing. Williams has served up 85 aces in this year's tournament, and won all but six of the games in which she is serving. Radwanska is going to need a supreme effort to prevent Williams from joining her sister Venus as a five time Wimbledon champion.
Venus was eliminated early in the Ladies' singles draw, but her and Serena have been finding success in the Ladies' doubles. The final match in that bracket is also Saturday, with the Williams sisters facing Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Murray downed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets during their semifinal meeting on Friday at the All England Club, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, to become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon finals since Bunny Austin in 1938. No British man has won the storied tournament since Fred Perry in 1936.
Murray had lost in the semifinals in three consecutive years, but finally broke through to reach his third Grand Slam final.
Federer defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in four sets in the first semifinal on Friday, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and will be looking for a record-tying seventh Wimbledon crown on Sunday. By beating Murray in the final, Federer would overtake Djokovic as the world's No.1-ranked player.

Roger Federer marched past world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Friday in the 2012 Wimbledon semifinals, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and next he will have his latest attempt at achieving history.
With a win in Sunday's men's final against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray, Federer would extend his record of Grand Slam titles to 17 and would tie Pete Sampras with seven Wimbledon crowns. He would also return to No. 1 in the world, which would match him with Sampras for most weeks spent atop the ATP rankings with 286.
Federer remained unbeaten in Wimbledon semifinals. He has only lost once in seven previous trips to the Wimbledon Finals, an epic five-set affair with Rafael Nadal in 2008.

Serena Williams set a tournament record with 24 aces on Thursday as she defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the 2012 Wimbledon semifinals.
Williams will look for her 14th Grand Slam title when she meets Agnieszka Radwanska in Saturday's final. Radwanska advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Angelique Kerber in the other semifinal match.
Williams aced Azarenka on match point for the record, her third ace of the second set tiebreaker. She also held the previous record of 23, which she set in the third round against Zheng Jie. Thursday's outing was considerably more impressive, since Williams recorded all her aces in just two sets.
The men's semifinals will be held on Friday. Novak Djokovic meets Roger Federer on one side of the bracket with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray facing off in the other.

The women's semifinals are underway on Thursday at Wimbledon. One match has already concluded, sending Agnieszka Radwanska to the women's finals.
Radwanska entered the semis ranked third. Despite that ranking, she had never before been to the semis at one of tennis' major tournaments. She also happens to be playing some of the best tennis of her career. She beat Angelique Kerber in straight sets to advance to the finals.
The eighth ranked Kerber struggled on serves, hitting in just 56 percent of her first serves. Radwanska, on the other hand, converted 78 percent of her serves and committed just six unforced errors in a 6-3, 6-4 win in straight sets.
Radwanska will take on the winner of the other semifinal match between No. 6 Serena Williams and No. 2 Victoria Azarenka. Williams is the last American still playing among both the women's and men's singles entrants. Azarenka has played like the favorite and assumed that role after Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the tournament.

Tennis fans could be in for a thrilling day of sports on Thursday. Serena Williams, the only American tennis player left in either the men's or women's singles at Wimbledon, vies for her seventh trip to the championship match at the historic event.

Williams has battled through her matches to get this far, while Azarenka has cruised. Williams knows the grass courts well, earning her last win here in 2010.
Play starts on Thursday with the semifinal match between No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 8 Angelique Kerber. Both women struggled in their last match, but Thursday's represents another start for each.
The action gets underway at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Coverage runs through 1:00 p.m., and the entire day of tennis can be seen live on ESPN. Online streaming is available for fans via Wimbledon or WatchESPN.

Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was upset in the fourth round at Wimbledon in straight sets by Sabine Lisicki on Monday, 6-4, 6-3.
With Victoria Azarenka winning on Monday, Sharapova is guaranteed to lose her world No. 1 ranking.
Lisicki, seeded No. 15, has made several strong runs at Wimbledon, where her big serve is magnified. She had six aces and 18 winners on Monday to keep Sharapova from becoming the first woman in a decade to win the French Open and Wimbledon in succession.
In other tournament news from Monday, Serena Williams defeated Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in three sets and Roger Federer advanced in four sets against Xavier Malisse of Belgium.

The fourth round at the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon begins Monday. Just 16 players remain on the men's and women's draws, respectively, and despite some notable upsets plenty of big names are still in play at the All England Club. No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova will continue their runs Monday. So will No. 3 Roger Federer, who is taking on Belgium's Xavier Malisse.
Federer and Djokovic will play on Centre Court, where you can follow the action live on ESPN from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET. Djokovic takes on a fellow Serbian, Viktor Troicki. Troicki is coming off a straight-set upset of No. 15 Juan Monaco and could prove to be a tough out for Djokovic, who dropped his first set of the tournament over the weekend facing Radek Stepanek.
Sharapova, on the other hand, looked strong in the last round, taking out Su-Wei Hsieh, 6-1, 6-4. She faces No. 15 Sabine Lisicki, who has gone to three sets in her last two matches.

Andy Roddick gave it everything he had in the 2012 Wimbledon third round against Spain's David Ferrer. Unfortunately for the 30th ranked American, it wasn't nearly enough.
Roddick fell to Ferrer in four sets after looking masterful in the first. Roddick won the first set 6-2 before getting knocked out soon thereafter. No. 7 Ferrer took care of business to move into the quarterfinals, beating Roddick 2-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, 6-3.
In other news, Mardy Fish helped to carry the flag for the Americans, polishing off German-born David Goffin in straight sets. Don't be fooled however, Goffin forced two tiebreaks with Fish before finally bidding the All England Club adieu, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6).
On the women's side of the draw, Serena Williams held on for deal life against No. 25 Jie Zhang. In what was supposed to resemble a cakewalk, Williams had to stave off the pesky Zhang in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 9-7.

Rafael Nadal was one of the favorites to win the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon, coming fresh off a win over No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the French Open. He suffered what was inarguably the biggest upset of the tournament so far, however, losing 6-7 (20), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, to the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol on Day 4 of the tournament. Rosol is the No. 100-ranked men's player in the world, making him the lowest ranked player to ever defeat Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament.
Otherwise, it was business as usual Thursday at the All England Club. Americans Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick both advanced. Fish is playing in his first Grand Slam tournament since the Australian Open after undergoing a May 23 procedure to correct his heart arrhythmia. He defeated James Ward in a thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-3. Roddick advanced to the third round, defeating Bjorn Phau, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
On the women's side of the draw, No. 6 Serena Williams advanced easily over Melinda Czink of Hungaria, 6-1, 6-4. No. 2 Maria Sharapova won her continuation from Wednesday's match, coming back strong late in a 7-6 (10), 6-7 (10), 6-0, win over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova.

Day 1 at the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon was a rough one for American competitors. Venus Williams lost in the first round at Wimbledon for just the second time in her career. Later, No. 11 John Isner, the top-ranked American on the men's draw, fell in five sets to Alejandro Falla of Spain.
Isner lost 6-4, 6-7 (16), 3-6, 7-6 (16), 7-5 despite serving up 31 aces to just four for his opponent. While serving was no problem for the 6'9 Isner, his control was. He committed 49 unforced errors to 22 for Falla. The match was incredibly tight, with Isner winning 164 points to 163 for the Spaniard.
The No. 1 seeds had a much easier time. Novak Djokovic won in straight sets over former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Maria Sharapova dispatched fellow Russian Anastasia Rodionova, 6-2, 6-3.
