2012 French Open, Round 1: Serena Williams Falls, Perfect First-Round Streak At Majors Over

Stay connected for news and updates

Serena Williams lost in the first round of a major tournament for the first time in her career on Tuesday, falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to Virginie Razzano of France.

Williams had been 46-0 in the first round of majors entering Tuesday's match, and she came two points away from extending that streak several times. In the second-set tiebreaker, Williams seized a commanding 5-1 lead and needed just two points to seal the match. But Razzano ticked off six straight points to steal the set and dispatched Williams in the deciding third set.

The fifth-seeded Williams had been looking for her 14th major title. Her previous worst finish at a major tournament came at the 1998 Australian Open, when she fell in straight sets to her sister Venus in the second round.
