David Ortiz Wants Multiyear Deal From Red Sox To Avoid Arbitration

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz would like to avoid arbitration by signing a multiyear deal with his current team, says an report from ESPN Deportes. Ortiz, who's currently in the Dominican Republic, spoke to ESPN's Javier Maymi about the offseason but mentioned he'd like to leave everything up "to the agents and the team to deal with it".

"I’m just working hard and working out to get ready for the spring. I really would like to get this over with so that we don’t have to go in front of the judge and I can stop having to talk about this," Ortiz said.

Last season, Ortiz, 36, made $12.3 million and compiled one of his better seasons hitting .309 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI. Ortiz was reportedly offered a two-year deal worth $18 million by the Red Sox this offseason

"If there's a way to make it work, we'd like to have him on the team moving forward and potentially have him finish his career with the Red Sox. We've had good dialogue, and I think there's a good understanding of our respective positions and a lot of mutual respect," Cherington said.
