Patriots vs. Jets 2012: New England's playmakers lead team to victory

Rich Schultz

The Patriots used big performances from guys like Julian Edelman, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen to rout the Jets on Thursday night.

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman scored two touchdowns in the team's 49-19 win over the New York Jets on Thursday night, after notching a pair of scores in last week's thrashing of the Indianapolis Colts. Simply put, Edelman just makes plays, writes Pats Pulpit's Tony Santorsa:

"I can only hope that Edelman recovers just fine from this concussion and is back on the field as soon as possible because he's really impressed me as a play-maker as of late."

Edelman followed up a performance against the Colts in which he returned a punt for a touchdown, had a 47-yard run, and caught a pass for a score by returning a fumble for a touchdown and connecting with Tom Brady for a 56-yard score against the Jets. However, Edelman suffered a concussion in the third quarter, putting his status for next week's game into question.

Still, the Pats were able to overcome the loss of tight end Rob Gronkowski - for now, at least - due to an influx of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Guys like Stevan Ridley, who Santorsa says helps the Patriots "run the ball as they please," and Shane Vereen, who "needs to be incorporated into the offense much more," fit that bill.
