After a amassing a 15-0 lead in the first half, UMass gets its first win of the season against Akron
The Minutemen are on the board in 2012. After starting off the season 0-9, UMass gets its first victory thanks to the play of quarterback Mike Wegzyn and four Akron turnovers. On the back of Wegzyn, the Minutemen notched three field goals and a passing touchdown to Alan Williams to build a 15-0 lead in the first half.
Akron mounted a charge in the second half with two touchdowns, but UMass countered with another, a 1-yard QB sneak from Wezgyn. Jawon Chisholm had 116 rushing yards and one of Akron's two scores, with quarterback Dalton Williams adding the other score through the air. But Williams' four interceptions dug too deep of a hole for the Zips, who move to 1-10 on the season.
This was the most points scored by UMass since Sept. 29 against Ohio, a 37-34 loss. That game was also the closest the Minutemen had come to winning in 2012, with the remainder of their defeats being by double-digits.
