It was another ugly weekend for (most of) the local college football teams, with Boston College being taken to the woodshed by Florida State and UConn losing its second straight Big East game against Temple. On the bight side, though, Harvard continued its winning ways, shredding Bucknell to remain undefeated.
Boston College was embarrassed by Florida State, losing 51-7, in its worst loss since the 2000 season. There was a brief moment -- brief, mind you -- when it looked like the Eagles could have some success against the Seminoles. After taking the ball deep inside the red zone, BC coughed up the ball on downs, and aside from a single touchdown drive, that would be the highlight of the game for the underperforming Eagles. Chase Rettig was held to 122 passing yards and a score, and Andre Williams rushed for 104 yards, but BC gave up 649 total yards and 439 passing yards to E.J. Manuel. BC falls to 1-5 and 0-3 in the ACC.
UConn blew a two touchdown lead and let its second straight Big East game slip away, losing to Temple, 17-14, in overtime. The Huskies went ahead 14-0 after two first quarter scores, but surrendered three unanswered scores, capped off by a 29-yard game-winning field goal from Brandon McManus. The Huskies had a chance to go ahead in the overtime, but Chad Christen missed a short field goal to give the Owls their second straight Big East win. Chandler Whitmer had 293 passing yards and two touchdowns and Max DeLorenzo rushed for 91 yards while former BC rusher Montel Harris darted for 142 yards for Temple. UConn fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Harvard used a big second quarter to crush Bucknell, 35-7. Colton Chapple threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 120 yards and two scores as the Crimson burned the Bison for 459 yards. Harvard had three big scoring plays in the game, with Chapple rushing for a 59-yard touchdown in the third quarter and Chapple throwing a 59-yard touchdown pass and Andrew Fischer running for a 59-yard score in the second. Harvard held Bucknell to 23 rushes on 37 rushes. The Crimson are still undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 Ivy League).
